Wow! I'm impressed. You have selected a nice route. I like it all except for the last part up that hill from the creek to the top. That must take a few extra calories. Good going.

Elvira is a low estrogen women who out-don giovanni's all the other women, because no man in his right mind would approach her on her own. The modern Elvira for you. Masetto has so confused, he should be punching Elvira, not poor Don, who haplessly came onto the scene. Masetto should be satisfying Elvira instead of complaining to everyone else. Zerlina has nothing to apologize because she never ran off with anyone -- it's a fiction Elvira composed on her rampage of poor unsuspecting Levitical men. This is the modern remake, except for Don Giovanni's family gets threatened if he doesn't give Elvira any attention. And musical friends show unusually double standard -- preventing Zerlina from having a personal life, while pimping everyone to Elvira. As usual, blame it on the usual suspects for this italian looking farce, manufactured solely by the libidinal needs of the French.

"single person in the opera or concert hall is having a different experience"

True enough, but as a relatively undiscerning member of the audience, my judgment of the performance is affected by the enthusiasm of others. If a majority of the audience stands after the performance, I'll probably end up standing.

During the perforance, enthusiasm is infectious. For opera, and for ballet, I appreciate works and performances which encourage applause, when applause is warranted, and discourage applause when not. If singer does great, I want a chance to applaud, and to hear others applauding, which encourages me to believe I've got (a little) musical taste.

A follower of the crowd. :-)

An interesting read indeed, and enlightening to read the comments on the original article, I think. I think one commenter made an especially good point: unlike books or paintings, live music (or dance) happens in a moment and passes on. It either works on a visceral level or it does not (and I am not saying that that is the only valid perception, but when it happens, it is pretty overwhelming). How many moments have I had in rehearsal that were not "perfect" or well planned or maybe even "correct" but literally brought me to tears? I think you can (and sure, should) offer critic of the tangible elements but I can promise you that every single person in the opera or concert hall is having a different experience, which may or may not have much to do with the precision and/or excellence of the performers on the stage. And that is pretty much why this is my life's work.

Yes, indeed there was, but it wasn't by the Wolf Trap Opera Company. "Dutchman" was presented by Opera Company of Boston at the Filene Center in 1980.

Loved the synergy between the artists on stage at Friday's performance, Kim. The variation of musical styles was appreciated as well. I think my favorite may have been the selection of The Kingfisher, which was paired with Terre's photo of Padre Island ( I think I remembered that right). The essence of stillness and grace was demonstrated in each aspect. Thanks for a unique experience!
